To all Cobras players, parents and guardians

Although it’s difficult to contemplate in the midst of Melbourne’s current wet and cold weather, cricket season commences in around 8 weeks. I email to welcome you all to season 2022/3 and update you on various issues. The Club is looking forward to a fantastic season of cricket in 2022/3, hopefully without any COVID related interruptions, unlike our last 2 seasons.

Club Committee

Our committee for 2022/3 comprises Mark Poustie (President), Chris Hoyling (Vice – President), Jason Povey (Secretary), Steve Ford (Treasurer), Matt McCann (Junior Section Manager), Jon Power, Scott White, Greg Smith, Brad Coughlan and Scott Chivers.

Pre-season

Pre-season indoor sessions commence at Hawthorn Indoor Cricket Centre, Mayston Street, Hawthorn on Tuesday 23 August. Session dates are Tuesday 23 and 30 August and 6 September, then Monday 12, 19 and 26 September.

Juniors will train from 5 – 7 pm, seniors from 6.30 – 8 pm. The overlap is intentional. Junior players will be allocated specific sessions for girls and age groups. Further details will be provided by Matt McCann in due course.

For senior players the first XI squad will commence at 6.30 pm, the balance of the seniors at 7 pm. Junior players wishing to play senior cricket are very welcome to attend senior sessions.

Outdoor sessions will be arranged closer to season commencement and advised separately.

Season commencement dates

We anticipate the senior season commencing on Saturday 1 October and the junior season commencing on Friday 7 October.

Senior coaching consultant

We are delighted to advise that Keith Jansz has agreed to be our senior coaching consultant at Boroondara this season. Keith will run a number of sessions with our first XI squad. Keith is a skilled teaching coach, runs his own cricket academy and among other duties is the current coach of the Victorian Country Women’s Team. He will soon participate in the over 60’s World Cup in Queensland.

Keith has provided invaluable assistance to our girls’ junior program previously.

Membership / registration

In the same manner as recent years, all registrations for senior and junior players and our Woolworths Blasters program (boys and girls) will be online. We are currently finalising set up of the registration pages and hope to be up and running in the next week.

Once registrations are open, I will advise separately thru email and social media.

Junior section volunteers

Matt McCann and Chris Hoyling are currently gathering our junior volunteers. Lisa Dobson has again agreed to be our girls’ co-ordinator and Geoff Steele, our under 16 age group co-ordinator. However, we are still seeking age group co-ordinators for the other younger age groups. Each junior team also requires a team manager and a coach.

If you have previously performed in any of these roles, the club would be delighted if you could do so once again. If you have not previously been involved, I encourage you to step forward. The reality is that to field junior teams the club needs parents to volunteer and assist us. From personal experience, to be actively engaged with your child’s sporting teams is extremely rewarding. It’s wonderful to get to know other children, you see children learning and improving and you form close and longstanding friendships with other parents.

Please feel free to contact Matt McCann or Chris Hoyling if you wish to discuss.

Season opening function

Our season opening function for all seniors, juniors and parents/guardians will be held at our home ground Victoria Road on Sunday 16 October at 4.30 pm. Please save the date. We will provide further details in due course.
